Alabama has 2 main golf instruction schools located
in Birmingham and Mobile. In Tuscaloosa, Alabama the University of
Alabama hosts a popular Crimson Tide Golf Academy for junior golfers.
But what Alabama is most famous for is the Robert Trent Jones Trail.
This is the most prestigious selection of 432 holes at 10 sites in
the country.
•The Cambrian Ridge course in Greenville has three distinct
9 hole courses that are considered to be quite a treat with its tall
pines surrounding its beautiful rolling fairways.
•The Highland Oaks Golf Course in Dothan is in the midst of
several lakes and wetlands and its openness offers the challenging
placement around the location of the lakes.
•Hampton Cove in Huntsville is a 54 hole course with Scottish
links lined with thousands of trees and rolling terrain. The River
Course of the Hampton Cove follows the Flint River and is the only
Robert Trent Jones course that is without a single bunker.
•Oxmoor Valley in Birmingham used to be a former mining land,
but is now a breath taking course that has several 150 foot elevation
changes and buttresses of limestone that jut out into the landscape.
The Short Course at Oxmoor Valley is considered by Golf Digest to
be one of the best valued courses.
•Capitol Hill Golf Course in Pratville is one of the more challenging
courses. It is made up of three courses, The Senator, The Legislator,
and The Judge. The Senator is the sight of the Ladies Navistar Open
each year, and this course also has 150 pot bunkers with some measuring
as high as 40 feet.
•The Grand National Resort in Auburn-Opelika is built on Lake
Saugahatchee. This course is considered to be the crowning glory of
the trail because it has 32 of its 54 holes touching the lake. The
Short Course at Grand National is considered to be one of the best
in the nation.
•Magnolia Grove Golf Course in Mobile is characterized by marshland,
lakes, and creeks. There is a Falls Course that beholds and amazing
water fall and The Crossing course has a unique aspect, which is it
crosses an old railroad track throughout the fairways.
•Ross Bridge Resort and Spa in Hoover was created to be a spa
and championship golf tournament destination. The tournament length
play offers almost 8,200 yards off the back tees in a park-like setting.
10 of its holes follow the shoreline of two man-made lakes with an
80 foot drop between the ninth and eighteenth greens. The elevation
changes and variety of pin placements will challenge the best golfers.
•The Shoals Course located in Muscle Shoals between Wilson and
Wheeler Dams consists of some of the most difficult courses in the
country. The Fighting Joe Course is 8,092 yards long and The Schoolmaster
has its fairways lines with trees that follow the banks of the Tennessee
River and make the element of trial and error mostly error.
•The Silver Lakes Course located on the edge
of the Talladega National Forest between Anniston and Gadsden incorporates
the natural terrain to challenge the golfer. The courses offer challenges
varying from its slopes and inclines of being in the Appalachian foothills
and its need for strategy due to the challenge of the use of water.
