GOLF COURSES IN COLORADO
The CGA and CWGA closed the doors Tuesday on the associations-owned
Mira Vista Golf Course in Denver. The course will be completely redesigned
by Renaissance Golf Design which is led by world-renowned architect
Tom Doak. The reconstruction will begin immediately, and the new course
(not yet named) is slated to open in spring of 2009. The CGA and CWGA
also recently hired Tracy Richard as the Superintendent for the new
facility, and Richard will work alongside Renaissance and oversee
the grow-in of the new course.
CGA/CWGA member facility Ballyneal in Holyoke has been named to Golf
Magazine’s prestigious list of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the
World. Designed by Tom Doak and Renaissance Golf (who is redesigning
Mira Vista), Ballyneal is ranked 82nd on the list.
The 41st Pacific Coast Amateur Championship is underway (August 7-10),
and Colorado is well represented! This year's team features the 2005,
2006 and 2007 CGA Match Play champions: CU's Patrick Grady of Omni
Interlocken, recent CSU graduate Aaron Weston of Meridian GC, and
current CSU player Zen Brown of Indian Tree GC.
In January of this year the Colorado Golf Association and Colorado
Women's Golf Association hired Renaissance Golf Design to redesign
the association-owned Mira Vista Golf Course. Renaissance Golf Design,
led by world-renowned architect Tom Doak, is certainly a fitting choice
for the redesign of the former Lowry Air Force Base golf course.

Designed by top architect Dick Phelps, Coal Creek Golf Course is
one of the finest and most exciting 18-hole public Colorado golf courses.
Unlike many other Colorado golf courses, Coal Creek provides an incredible
golf experience for every caliber of golfer while surrounded by breathtaking
views of the nearby Flatiron Mountains. This Colorado golf course
measures 7,028 yards from the back tees and 5,185 yards from the forward
tees thus ensuring challenge and enjoyment for each and every golfer.
This mature Colorado golf course features a links-style front nine
with an abundance of water. The back nine has dramatic elevation changes
and strategically placed bunkers.
Colorado is the best place in America to play golf--six months of
the year. Other months Colorado becomes the best place in America
to ski. Summers offer sunny days, low humidity, cooler temperatures
(especially in the mountains), spectacular views and very few pesky
bugs. The mountain golf season, however, runs only from May through
October. Other areas of Colorado have longer seasons. Colorado golf
resorts are usually near the ski resorts where golf courses, hotels
and condominiums spread from the base of the mountain. There are only
a few "traditional" golf resorts--huge hotels and multiple
adjacent golf courses. The Colorado Golf Resort Association is administered
by John Edwards. For 22 years, he has served as the editor of the
Colorado Golfer providing current golf information and advice to residents
and visitors. He is the National President of the Golf Travel Writers
of America and heads the Rocky Mountain Golf Writers Association.
