GOLF COURSES IN GEORGIA
Georgia is home to golf legend Bobby Jones, the country’s
oldest golf club – the Savannah Golf Club – and the world’s
most prestigious golf tournament – The Masters® in Augusta.
No other state gives you such an opportunity to be a part of the history
and heritage of the game of golf.
Arrowhead Pointe at Lake Richard B Russell State Park opened in
July, 2004 to rave reviews and has quickly become one of the most
popular courses in northeast Georgia. To prove that point, the Bob
Walker-designed course, located just north of Elberton was just
named by Golf Digest the first runner-up to America’s Best
New Affordable Course for 2005.
The 6,800 Arrowhead Point is situated on a peninsula within the
state park and the water views are stunning, with 10 of the 18 holes
skirting Lake Richard B Russel. Golf Digest has conducted America’s
Best New Courses rankings since 1982. Its panel of more than 800
low-handicap male and female golfers nationwide played and evaluated
(at their own expense) nominated golf courses that opened between
May 1, 2004 and April 30, 2005. Golf courses were rated on shot
values, design variety, memorability, resistance to scoring and
aesthetics. The average scores for each criterion were combined
and totaled to determine the winners.
The Golf Operations Section develops and operates the golf facilities
for the Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites Division of the Department
of Natural Resources. The eight courses were developed over the
past forty years and placed in various state parks to improve the
quality of life for local citizens and provide visitors to Georgia
an opportunity to play golf in a beautiful, natural setting.
The Georgia State Golf Association, founded in 1916, is a non-profit
organization dedicated solely to serving the game of golf and its
membership of more than 360 member clubs and their 85,000 members.
The GSGA annually conducts 18 competitions that are open for statewide
participation for men and women of all ages and skill levels, four
interstate team competitions, a statewide junior sectional program
for boys and girls and 17 qualifying events for all USGA championships.
The 18-hole "Augusta National" course at the Augusta
National Golf Club facility in Augusta, Georgia features 7,270 yards
of golf from the longest tees for a par of 72. The course rating
is 74 and it has a slope rating of 135. Designed by Alister MacKenzie/Robert
Trent Jones, Jr., ASGCA, the Augusta National golf course opened
in 1933. James Armstrong manages the course as the General Manager.
On the out-skirts of Savannah and nominated by the natives as the
best golf course in Savannah for the years 2000, 2001 and 2002 is
the Henderson Golf Club. Playing at nearly 6700 yards this course
will test every aspect of your game and at the same time offer playability
for even the highest of handicapper. Carved around 200 acres of
the unspoiled natural wetlands, the front nine is open and rolling
inviting you to push the boundaries of average driving distance.
But be weary of the strategically placed fairway bunkers that can
cause havoc if your not careful.
Just 45 minutes south of Savannah a golf course was carved out
of nearly 200 acres of "Low Country creating the Sapelo Hammock
Golf Club. With a distinct and unique design that matches the surrounding
and winding terrain, one is enchanted by the tall majestic moss
covered oaks standing as sentries directing the flight of wayward
golf balls throughout the course.
